Terrorist Incidents Since 9/11

While international agencies continue to work to prevent further incidents and have been successful in disrupting terrorist activities before an attack occurs, the threat of terrorism remains constant as evidenced by a number of significant terrorist incidents across the globe since September 11, 2001. Some of these incidents are described below.

2009 Jakarta, Indonesia Twin suicide bombings were carried out in the restaurants of the J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels. Two Canadians were among the injured in this attack.
2008 Mumbai, India In a coordinated attack terrorists using automatic weapons, grenades and improvised explosive devices attacked several locations throughout Mumbai. Two Canadians were killed and two were injured in the assault.
2008 Islamabad Pakistan An armed suicide bomber drove a dump truck filled with explosives through a security checkpoint and detonated it in front of the Marriott Hotel resulting in over 300 casualties.
2007 Rawalpindi, Pakistan After completing an address to a rally of her supporters, Benazir Bhutto was killed when shots were fired, followed by an explosion. A total of 21 were killed and 48 injured in the attack.
2007 Karachi, Pakistan Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s motorcade was attacked while on route from the airport to her homecoming rally. The two explosions resulted in over 130 deaths and at least 450 injuries.
2007 Glasgow, UK A Jeep Cherokee loaded with gas containers and propane cylinders crashed into the doors at the Glasgow airport and caught fire. This attack was linked to the London car bomb incident.
2007 London, UK Two car bombs were discovered in downtown London. Both bombs were disabled before they could be detonated.
2007 Algiers, Algeria Two suicide car bomb explosions rocked the Algerian capital city killing 12 people and injuring 262. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the attacks.
2006 Mumbai, India Bombs exploded on Mumbai’s commuter trains, resulting in at least 200 fatalities and over 700 injuries.
2005 Bali Three bombs exploded in Bali restaurants during the dinner rush. There were 25 fatalities. Two Canadians were among the injured.
2005 Amman, Jordan Three suicide bombers attacked the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS, and Days Inn hotels in Amman killing over 60 and wounding over 300 people.
2005 London, UK Bombs exploded in three train stations and a double decker bus with over 50 people killed and 700 injured. Several groups claimed responsibility.
2004 Amsterdam, Netherlands Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh was shot and stabbed to death while cycling in Amsterdam.
2004 Beslan, Russia A group of heavily-armed terrorists took an estimated 1200 people hostage at School Number One demanding the end to the 2nd Chechen War. The majority of the over 1200 casualties of this attack were children.
2004 Madrid, Spain Ten bombs exploded on the transit system killing 191 people and injuring almost 1,900 others.
2003 Istanbul, Turkey Suicide bombers detonated truck bombs outside the British Consulate and HSBC bank headquarters. At least 30 people were killed including the British Consul General and 450 were injured.
2003 Jakarta, Indonesia A car bomb exploded in front of the Marriott Hotel killing 12 and wounding 149.
2002 Mombasa, Kenya A vehicle was driven to the front of the Paradise Hotel and exploded, killing 15 people and injuring 40 others.
2002 Limburg (French tanker) A small boat exploded next to the French Supertanker Limburg resulting in a gaping hole in the hull and a large fire. Fifty thousand barrels of oil were released into the Gulf of Aden. One crewman drowned.
2002 Bali Two bombs exploded outside two Bali nightclubs resulting in 202 fatalities, including two Canadians.
